The Elements of Hardware, Machine And Decoration Chains

In the truck transportation business, the tie down chains and tire chains are what people use the most, in reality there are more chains products than truck chains, there are proof coil chains, high test chains, twisted link chains and more, of course there is towing industry, the Tow Chains are playing the main role, almost all these chains are steel product.

If not specified, tie down chains usually means grade 70 binder chains , we usually say binder chains, there are two different standard bodies governing these chains, American Society for Testing and Materials, and NACM. ASTM standard indicates the chains are short link ones, while NACM are regular link chains. Short link and regular link chains have same strength, the only difference is flexibility, if you need the chains to wrap around a tight corner, you probably need short link ones, regular link chains probably will not fit. The tie down chains are mostly used in transportation, for the purpose of cargo securement, no doubt you can use these chains for some other purposes, such as towing, etc.

Tire chains also called snow chains sometimes, obviously tire chains don’t equal snow chains, for instance, you probably will put tire chains on when the road is icy. We always see tire chains sold in pairs, because you can’t just chain up one tire, and you can replace just one piece of chain at one time. Due to the use condition, all tire chains are made from steel. People will match tire chains to their vehicle tire size, if you drive a sedan, you will need passenger car tire chains, You will need truck tire chains if you drive a pickup with big wheels.

And the hardware chains are a big category, you will find a lot different chains in this family. For instance, machine chains, with twisted link and straight link, and twisted and straight link coil chains, sash chains , grade 30 electro-galvanized and hot-dip galvanized chains, and all those decoration steel chains, this is a big family. Hardware chains have specific features and applications, grade 30 chains, aka proof coil chains, are the popular one, for the record, the grade 30 chains can even be used for the decoration purpose.

Last but not least, let’s check out tow chains, actually people only offer 51/6” in trade size, the WLL of tow chain is 4700 lbs, actually this strong enough for almost all cases, due to standardization of tow trucks, only a few varieties of tow chains are needed, such as 5/16”x6′ and 5/16”x10′, and hooks have long shank J hook and sports T & J hook variation, since tow trucks all have same design and set up, only standard tow chains are needed, this is actually is good thing.
