Tie down means a lot different things to different applications , we will talk about trailer tie downs in our discussion, to make things simple, I’m sure you’ve already seen flatbed tie downs on the road, we will only talk about flat beds for the time being.
When the jobs come your way, chances are you are not going to decide what kind of stuff will be put on your truck, the only thing you can do is to prepare for all the opportunities , most of the time you don’t get to choose what you like or want to do. Now let’s talk about winch straps and truck winches, lots of flat beds have winches installed or you can install winches later, then you’ll be able to use winch straps with truck winches, it should be a no brainer .
New flatbeds usually will have truck winches installed, this is a big plus for hauling stuff can be secured by winch strap. When you work with truck winches and winch straps, there is one thing you can’t live without: winch bar, these steel bars are essential for your job, so get one if you don’t already have one.
Usually most flatbeds will be sold with winches installed, there are still some of them come without winches though, in this case the drivers may use ratchet straps or binder chains as alternative. When the flat bed have the winches installed, we can use winch tie down straps to tie down articles on the trailer , usually we tie down steel coils, concrete pipes, skids, anything that not too heavy for the the straps’ working load limit. Both flat hooks and wire hooks may be used on 2”, 3” and 4” winch straps, but flat hooks are more popular than wire hooks, you may see flat hooks on all size winch straps while wire hooks mostly on 2” straps. We can find 2” and 4” winches and 2” and 4” winch tie downs, depends on different situation , the length can be 20′-40′ or more than 50′ long.
Then there are most popular tie downs: ratchet strap. What we call ratchet straps are actually assemblies, the ratchet buckles with short straps, one foot or longer, and the long straps, 6 feet or longer.
Ratchet straps are most used tie down straps because of their adaptability , you can put them almost anywhere when it’s applicable. The ratchet straps may have flat hooks, double J hooks, chain anchors, cloth loops or just plain straps at both ends, probably some special made ratchets have some other funny ends, say, D ring? And it’s width can be 1” through 4”, length can be a few inches to more than 50′. Even for flatbeds which use winch straps primarily the ratchets may be essential, just think about this scenario, while you’re on the way to deliver your load one of the winches comes off, and it’s midnight it’s impossible to find a new or used winch, you will have to use ratchet strap to fix the problem.
For us to get nice ratchet tie downs will be easy sometimes, and difficult some other times , depends on what you need and your budget. Depends on your needs , sometimes acquire them locally is more appropriate , sometimes online sales are much better. Nowadays there are a lot of forums, blogs and online opinion sites out there, you just need to read some reviews, customer feed backs to figure out the product and service quality of the vendors, you don’t have to buy the essential tie downs blindly.
